Painting Tutorial by WieldstheKey Painting Tutorial by WieldstheKey
EDIT: `Charlie-Bowater Also provides this PERFECT brush for Photoshop. Best I've ever used, and it creates a painterly look without having to take so much time with flow and opacity. Here it is: [link] USE IT!

So obviously this is a big file.
As a request from my good friend ~ziggyfish, I made a quick tutorial on my painting technique. As I'm still figuring things out, I'm sure there is a better way, but here's mine.

You do some amazing work. Thank you for the tutorial. I was having a hard time comprehending how this "painting" goes on Manga Studio, but this made it easier to understand thanks again.

Phenominal tutorial. I've been looking for aeons for something that looks somewhat realistic yet allows me to keep my lines to allow the work to look smooth and finished and this has helped me get one step closer. Thank you. ^^

I'm so glad that this little tutorial could help! I still use this process for finished illustrations, but I find that painting loosely from photos really helps as well.

I would suggest finding a painting by an artist you like and use their palette for the skin so you don't have to worry about figuring that out, and just work on technique :) Glad I could help!

Is it me, or did their lips get closer with each picture, then separate at the end...

I'm glad it helped! I'm still figuring out new ways to paint. The default flat watercolor brush is great as well.

I still have a long way to go. I'm still just trying to master airbrushing. I've never actually painted a real picture so it's kind of a weird experience to figure out what way works and what doesn't for the watercolor brush.

I'd say just take a look at the painters you admire and try to emulate their methods, or even better yet watch some livestreams. Airbrushing is fine and good but painting is a much more convincing and pleasing look. For the watercolor brush, go into the brush settings, to Other Dynamics, and set opacity and flow jitters to Pen Pressure. :)

You do it quit beautifully! I guess I will just have to do a stakeout for livestreams. but I will try the watercolor brush when I get my free time back. Usually I like opacity on half and pressure really low so I can go back and forth a couple instead of undo a bunch of times to get the colors to the depth I want them. I don't know how that is going to work out on watercolor thought.

With the jitters set to pen pressure, there's no need to drop the opacity or flow down because they're controlled by how lightly you press with the pen. I used to spend lots of time jumping between opacities but this eliminates the need for that step :) I do still drop my opacity to around 60 for the more detailed sections. But for laying down initial colors, 100% works just fine.

Just try to paint from photos using the color picker (alt) and remember that it won't look great right away so keep working even if you feel like giving up. I always have to remind myself of that.
